With these 5-hour energy shots it really doesn’t seem to matter what flavour they say it is – what you get is a quick burst of bitter flavour down your neck followed by a pick-up a few minutes later. And that’s what really matters… you do taste the berry I guess, briefly, but it’s not important or much different to the other flavours!

I discovered this is a convenience store in New York, flossing over it originally when seeing The Summer Edition thinking I’d already tried it… then I noticed it was Coconut Berry not Lime. Weird combo, but it works! They’ve left the coconut subtle and the berry compliments it nicely, very refreshing indeed and like no drink I’ve tried before.
Full marks for originality, but sadly this drink was one of only three from memory that I couldn’t finish. It was very bitter and tasted pretty nasty to me, I had about half the bottle before I gagged. Maybe I was in the wrong mood for it, but I had to chuck the rest away. If I ever come across the original (or any other variant) I’d give them a go out of curiosity.
Well, I suppose it’s ok – but nothing special. It’s like they’ve taken the idea from an own-brand (like Asda/Tesco) and then watered it down somewhat. It tastes to me like a weak mixed berry squash. Just like the Orange and Clementine version, it has a natural source of caffeine and contains fruit juice. It’s still my personal opinion that you shouldn’t start the day with an energy drink – your normal healthy diet should come first, therefore I can’t condone the branding choice here. But… if you had to choose a First Start drink, I’d go for the Orange over this Berries one.

A really tasty orange flavoured drink. Lightly carbonated and not too strong at all in terms of its flavour. Again, like the Yuzu variety, it’s balanced just right and quite refreshing.

I generally like the berry energy drinks – each one tends to taste very different depending on which berry they’ve chosen to base it around. In this instance I was quite surprised – I think it’s like a sherbet cherry flavour. It’s really sweet and tangy, and very nice especially on the scorching hot day I tried it on. It has a slightly higher caffeine content than most drinks, and also includes the body-builder’s favourite BCAAs if you like that sort of thing.

This drink is dangerous! Pay careful attention to the caffeine content labelled on the can and the associated warning text. A regular can of Red Bull contains 32mg of caffeine per 100ml of drink, Spike contains more than three times that amount making this a very potent cocktail. Ok, so it genuinely has zero calories, but there is a warning on the can advising you to drink just half a can in order to assess your tolerance to it. It *will* wake you up, and in my case give you a headache which is unusual for me! I followed the instructions, consuming half a can first, waiting about 8 hours before having the rest and I’d suggest anyone else trying this drink also be cautious. It does taste pretty good though – it’s a smooth mixed berry flavour from what I can tell and it’s balanced about right.

Yeah I’m pretty sure that Emerge re-brand every week. I can’t keep up with their ‘Dual’ or not ‘Dual’ or whatever branding, and now it appears they have taken their berry flavour and just called it Juicy Berry. I don’t think this is a new drink, but it’s got a new name.
Very, very watery! I think there’s a reason that most fruity energy drinks are carbonated, and that’s because without those bubbles tingling your nerve endings you just don’t get much flavour out of the drink at all. It’s like a very weak berry flavoured squash. Probably better for drinking if you’re about to do some strenuous exertion of some sorts, but other than that it’s not up to much.
