Battery Remix

March 9th, 2024

Quite often the combo of lime and strawberry in a drink can be slightly too sour, but Battery have got the mix just right. All this drink needs now is a glass full of crushed ice and a couple of shots of rum to make it the perfect strawberry daiquiri.

TØRST Festival Energi Utopia

March 2nd, 2024

Discovered in a supermarket in Norway, I picked this one because I initially thought you perhaps pronounced the name TRST in the same way an Irish person might pronounce ‘thirst’. But, it looks like it’s just a stylised anomaly because the actual drink’s name is TØRST (you can see the Ø hidden behind the TRST on the logo). I’m not sure if this is a special edition flavour called Festival Energi Utopia, or if it’s just affiliated with a festival named ‘Utopia’ for promotional reasons, but it’s not really a special flavour. I’m putting this down as a clone as it tastes like a regular own-brand drink. If I had to describe the taste I would say that there are notes of aniseed with a slight tang of burnt caramel. It’s very nice, don’t get me wrong, but it doesn’t have a stand-out unique flavour.

Club-Mate Zero

February 24th, 2024

This was gifted to me by a family member from Germany. I’m reliably informed that “this is what all of the computer geeks drink in Germany”… so the look of the drink is very similar to Red Bull or any other caramel-coloured energy drink really. When you pour it out of the bottle it froths up, like beer does, and it has a head that hangs around for quite a while! For me though the taste wasn’t great. I found it quite bitter and, well, basically it’s a fizzy cup of cold tea. If you aren’t in to the sweetness of energy drinks then this might be a great alternative for you.

Day & Nite

February 17th, 2024

Found in a small supermarket in Haugesund, Norway. As with most of the Norwegian drinks I saw, this has a premium can design and heavy price tag to go with it (doesn’t everything in Norway?). Sadly inside it’s just a standard sugar-laden energy drink. It’s sweet and slightly tangy, which is very nice, but it’s still a generic flavoured drink much like any supermarket own-brand. If anything, it reminds me a bit of the original Euro Shopper energy drink.

Raptor Orange Mango

February 10th, 2024

Well, it’s not so much orange as mango, or tropical really. It’s a large can of tropical energy drink. Quite smooth and refreshing but other than the funky dinosaur can design there isn’t much that make this drink stand out.

Ghost Orange Cream

February 3rd, 2024

Orange Cream, is that a thing? Maybe it’s an American thing because I’ve not heard of such a flavour before. I’ll tell you what this drink does remind me of though, did you ever go to a Little Chef restaurant as a child and get offered an orange lollipop after your meal? They were rectangular, orange on the outside and white on the inside and somehow stripped the skin from the roof of your mouth? Well, that’s the flavour – strong, orange, and sugary! Probably the best of the three flavours of Ghost I have tried so far.

Ghost Warheads Sour Watermelon

January 27th, 2024

The second of three Ghost energy drinks from the USA that I’m trying – this time Warheads Sour Watermelon flavour. I’ve never tried Warheads but they appear to be a sour flavoured hard candy and I had plenty of sour sweets as a child, but I’ve no reference point to compare this drink against sadly. As a standalone drink it is both sour and watermelony, but very sickly and strong in flavour much like the blue raspberry one was. Not a great taste experience and not very refreshing.

Ghost Sour Patch Blue Raspberry

January 20th, 2024

This is a new brand to me, I’m not sure if it’s well known or not in the USA but a friend brought a selection back from holiday for me to try. The can is totally plain but with a plastic wrap label like you tend to get on PR-sty;e custom made drinks for special events, however it doesn’t look or feel like a typical corporate brand can. The word ‘Ghost’ for example is embossed and the lettering / imagery on the yellow section of the label is textured. It has the feel of a premium drink. I had a look on their web site and there are about a dozen different flavours, quite a few of them seem to be partnered with various confectionary brand – Swedish Fish energy drink sounds amazing. This one, Sour Patch Kids, is a blue raspberry flavour. It does indeed taste of blue raspberry but sadly I don’t have any Sour Patch Kids sweets against which to compare. As a drink though, it was quite sickly. I drank the lot, don’t get me wrong, but it was a chore. Perhaps in their desire to closely match the flavour of the sweets, they forgot that if you eat massive bag of sweets you start to feel sick. Two other flavours to try though…

Raptor Citrus

January 6th, 2024

I love lemon energy drinks, and this one despite being generically named ‘citrus’ is pretty lemony. It’s refreshing and smooth, really nice. It has just the right balance of sweetness and sharpness and is low calorie too.
